Condemned jobs - UNISON adverts highlight danger of public sector cuts 23/04/2011

UNISON, the UK's largest trade union, today launches the first phase of a massive advertising campaign, warning of the dangers of the coalition's reckless spending cuts.

A series of newspapers ads warn of the consequences of public sector workers losing their jobs and feature nurses, paramedics, porters, PCSOs, 999 operators, social workers and librarians.

The full colour ads make the connection between the loss of public service jobs and vital services that people rely on.

Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON, said:

"The public sector is being hit with a staggering 400,000 job cuts because of the coalition government's spending cuts. UNISON is taking out ads in national and regional papers as well as on-line, to warn the public that when jobs go, vital services that people rely on go too.

"The local elections are only a few weeks away and we want to get the message across that the cuts are a political choice, not a necessity as the condem government claims."

The newspaper and online ads start from 20 April for 3 weeks.

The ads will run in The Guardian, The Mirror, The Mail, The Express and The Metro, and in a range of regional publications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

UNISON Scotland is running its own pre-election campaign. The full list of regional publications is detailed below. Copies of the adverts are attached.

Online versions of these adverts will run on national and local news websites, as well as key networks such as Yahoo, and as a Google Adword campaign.
